CEBURN-ARCHIE From Kimma-Caregiver Wellness Retreat : https://smart.bio/synthesishealth/ As a speaker and educator, Dr. Ceburn has developed a program that empowers people to embrace and sustain healthy lifestyles. In 2006, she founded an integrative health practice, Synthesis Health, to help her clients achieve their health and wellness goals. As a practicing physician, she saw the huge disconnect between the great strides being made in the fields of nutrition and wellness and the actual translation of that information into her patient’s lives. Synthesis Health is an effort to close that gap through greater accessibility to health and wellness counseling and practical tools and/or treatments for daily living. Synthesis Health emphasizes a focus on health within the context of bio-individuality and personal accountability. Synthesis Health is grounded in Dr. Cebrun’s diverse academic and clinical training. She works for improvement in community healthcare disparities through her work with her church and sorority. From Kimma-Caregiver Wellness Retreat : Welcome back. During the breakout Dr. Cebrun was asked "Does an Emergency Rm. have a patient advocate?" She answered that not every ER has a Patient Advocate but you should always ask for one because that asking can cause a shift. From Amber Jarvis : Loved all of that GJ From GJ Hodson (he/they/she) : <3 From Amy O'Connor ALZ Volunteer : Great message! From Chris Webb : Looking forward to listening to your podcast. From Jennifer Plessner : GJ - when you are caring for someone 24 hours a day, how do you take steps to say yes to caring for yourself even for just 5 min or 30 min without feeling guilty? We often times choose everyone and everything else above our own needs, even though we know that taking better care of ourselves will benefit our love and care for those we are caring for… From GJ Hodson (he/they/she) : @Jennifer If knowing how important it is to take care of yourself doesn't work, cheat! The habit doesn't appear overnight, so you do what you have to until you've internalized some kind of practice or routine. Don't think about how you get there, just get there. If all you have is 5 seconds, SIGH. "Fake it 'til you make it." Get someone(s) from your own support system to show up and take care of you. One thing I did was incorporate a daily stretch when I was fresh out of the shower, just 5 minutes a day to stay in my body (should start doing that again actually...). The important thing is don't just let it become something else to feel BAD about. If you find yourself doing that, just take a break, move on with your day, try something else tomorrow. From melanievigil : Hiking with my dog From Alexandra Weil : Dementia+ lifelong Depression + Alcoholism. Any thoughts on how to address this trifecta? From Katelin-CarePartners : I said this earlier to someone else, but reframing how we talk about our One Thing makes a huge difference... If we move "I only walked 10 minutes today" to "WOW! Go me! I walked 10 minutes" then we are letting go of that guilt surrounding self care and turning it into a positive. From Kimma-Caregiver Wellness Retreat : Love that reframing Katelin! From liz : This is a very powerful discussion which many people do not feel comfortable having. There is so much grief in a family about the illness, as well as about the changing family dynamics, loss of friends and life as it formally was. From Steve N : How about when the person with dementia thinks they're absolutely fine but YOU have the problem? From Kimma-Caregiver Wellness Retreat : Liz <3 From David Davis : Steve,You have to first realize that you can't alter, change their mind or get them to understand what reality is. You are the one who has to change the behavior to accommodate what they are thinking. From Steve N : Thank you, David. I've always been taught you have no control over people, places, or things, only yourself. Good to remember. From melanievigil : After my walks I feel somewhat refreshed to get back to caring for my Mom. I take pictures on my walk to show her the pictures I take From Steve N : That's a great idea! From Soni Mohan : that's beautiful. I love that idea. From Stephanie at MFAH Rienzi : Melaine, I love that idea, and you can look together. From melanievigil : Thank you I hope everyone tries it! From melanievigil : Pick your battles and try your best to go with the flow From liz : I'm curious to know about how many people are dealing with early onset alzheimers with their spouses? From David Davis : liz, we are not sure how many folks are here today living with early onset (anyone diagnosed with Alzheimer's under the age of 65) but it is becoming more and more prevalent. From Betty Goss : We had/have 3 family members with early onset: Father; older brother; now younger sister. Father diagnosed about age 59?; brother about age 50?; now sister was probably less than 55 years old when things started; diagnosed officially at age 63. From Steve N : My brother Chris and I had two cousins diagnosed with early onset. Lori was 40 when she died; Pam died when she was 50. It was hereditary, passed on from their mother, who also died of early onset, but when she died in 1984 (85?), they didn't know about Alzheimers and thought it was a variant of Jakob-Kreuzfeld. Chris got the Austin American-Statesman to write a story about it, after permission from Pam's widower and the remaining sister, Paula.
